Gabbie cook

dancer and circus artist

Acrodance

this workshop is designed to make acrobatics accessible for dancers and movement accessible for acrobats. through floorwork, acrobatic training, improvisation tasks and choreographed sequences, you will be guided on how to float into acrobatics and receive the floor with softness. we will also work on specific conditioning exercises for injury prevention. in order to perform with power and fluidity, we will work with the sensation of falling, spiralling and suspension to generate, harness and redirect momentum. through this process, you will learn how to smoothly combine movement and acrobatic skills within the context of improvisation and choreographed phrases. throughout the four days, participants will be encouraged to develop and apply their signature style to the workshop material. being both a dance and circus artist, i bring expertise from both fields, i have a keen eye for analysing movement and extensive knowledge of the biomechanical principles of acrobatics. through sharing this knowledge, i wish to empower beginners to train alone safely and to creatively challenge more advanced learners. we will also build towards applying the technique to physical theatre tasks. i frame this as an extension of the technique itself, using the physicality of movement and acrobatics to create characters and tell stories. we’ll pay close attention to changes in rhythm, focus and tension to feel and observe how it changes the story that is expressed.

the description reflects an artist’s idea which was developed at the time it was submitted to b12. it may have changed by the time the workshop or the performance project is starting. please stay flexible. thank you!
